Vastu Purusha Mandala

The Vastu Purusha Mandala is the sacred grid that describes how cosmic energy occupies a plot. Vastu Purusha is envisioned as lying across the site, and each part of that body maps to rooms, functions, and sensitivities in building design.

Understanding the Mandala

Classical texts divide the site into a square grid (often 9x9 or similar modules). Deities and elemental qualities preside over cells of the grid. Designers use this map to decide open zones, heavy construction, and forbidden placements.

  • The head of Vastu Purusha is associated with the North-East.
  • The feet and heavier limbs relate to the South-West.
  • The navel / center is the Brahmasthan and should stay open and pure.
  • Pressure on sensitive cells (especially center and NE) creates lasting discomfort.

Using the Mandala in Practice

  • Draw the plot as a square or rectangle first; irregular shapes need careful zoning.
  • Never dig deep pits or place septic systems in the Brahmasthan.
  • Align major rooms to their preferred cells before finalizing interiors.
  • If a column must sit near center, keep surrounding floor open and bright.
  • During Griha Pravesh and Vastu Shanti, honor the center and NE with cleanliness and prayer.

Quick Checklist
