Advance Cleaning
Best Direction / TipOne day before
Sweep, wash, and clear belongings so the home feels ready for sacred occupancy.
Griha Pravesh Puja Vidhi is the complete step-by-step ritual for entering a new home with divine blessings. Hindu housewarming is elaborate: clean a day ahead, fix the muhurat, open the threshold with coconut and mantra, purify the kitchen, worship in the North-East, and close with prasad and a calm first stay in the house.
Puja in a Hindu household needs advance preparation. Many items are not everyday kitchen stock, so gather samagri early and keep the home almost empty of clutter. Cleanliness is treated as the first offering: wash the house inside and out a day before, and leave only essential lights and fans if your tradition prefers an unused look for the ceremony morning.

Best Direction / TipMain entrance
Break a coconut at the door while Vedic mantras are recited; light camphor as the pandit guides.
Best Direction / TipWith deity image
The householder enters with family, carrying Ganesha or the family deity into the home.
Best Direction / TipCoconut and holy water
Break another coconut in the kitchen and sprinkle water (often with Ganga jal); exclude bathrooms.
Best Direction / TipSign of abundance
The lady of the house boils milk in a new vessel until it overflows, then prepares sweet rice for offering.
Best Direction / TipNorth-East corner
Establish the main ceremony with Kalash, lamps, offerings, and mantras for Ganesha and Vastu.
On the day itself, begin at the entrance. A male family member traditionally breaks the coconut on the doorway and may light camphor near the threshold while the pandit chants. After this, the owner leads the family inside with the deity image, moving toward the kitchen for a second coconut and water sprinkling through the main rooms. Many families also use gomutra as a purifying spray where custom allows.
While Ganesha and Vastu preparations continue in the North-East, milk is boiled until it spills. Rice is then cooked in that milk into a sweet offering, first presented in the puja and later shared as prasad. A mango-leaf string with lemons is hung on the main door. Families who perform Ganapati Homa regard the sacred fire and smoke as a further cleansing of Vastu doshas.
Distribute prasad, keep the home gently lit, and avoid treating the day as only a photo event. If construction faults remain, discuss Vastu Puja or Vastu Shanti with your pandit. For a simpler path when a priest is unavailable, see self Griha Pravesh. Keep mantras handy with the mantra guide.
